In the dystopian future of 2023, sentient robots known as Sentinels are exterminating mutants and humans. A small band of mutant survivors manage to evade the Sentinels thanks to the powers of Kitty Pryde, who has the ability to project a person’s consciousness back in time to deliver warnings, with the limitation that changes made in the past will not alter the future until the time traveller returned to observe the effect.

Pryde’s group rendezvous with Magneto and Professor Charles Xavier in a monastery in China. They hatch a plan to send Wolverine’s consciousness back in time to prevent Mystique from murdering Bolivar Trask, the lead designer of the Sentinels. Trask’s assassination will make him a martyr, Mystique will be captured and her mutant powers will be reverse-engineered and used to create the formidable Sentinels of the future. Professor X advises Logan to seek out his younger self for aid.

Storyline

After losing his beloved Kisha in a car accident, Malcolm starts anew, by remarrying Megan, a mother of two. When things begin to get back into their paranormal ways, targeting both the children and the property, things complicate even more when his back-to-life Kisha moves into the neighborhood.

The movie opens with Malcolm Johnson (Marlon Wayans) and his cousin Ray-Ray (Affion Crockett) driving Malcolm’s possessed girlfriend Kisha (Essence Atkins) to the hospital after he beat her senseless for trying to attack him. Kisha starts making a fuss and fights Malcolm, then breathes into Ray’s face. He passes out at the wheel and collides with a truck. Somehow, everybody is okay, but Malcolm and Ray leave an unconscious Kisha in the backseat and run away.

One year later, Malcolm has married Megan (Jamie Pressly), an insecure woman with two kids, her bratty and promiscuous teenage daughter Becky (Ashley Rickards) and effeminate son Wyatt (Steele Stebbins), who has a stereotypically black imaginary friend named Tony. The family moves into a new home with their dog, Shiloh Jr. Within minutes, a safe falls on the dog and crushes him. Malcolm hysterically cries all the way to when they bury the dog.
Malcolm carries a camera around while exploring the house, one of the first things the couple finds is a creepy looking doll named Abigail. Malcolm messes around with it until he starts having sex with it. Later, Malcolm meets the neighbor, Miguel (Gabriel Iglesias), who jumps at every chance he gets to call Malcolm racist whenever he comments on something related to a Mexican stereotype, though all of it is in jest.
Malcolm records himself having sex with Megan (four times) and notices the Abigail doll turning its head. He also finds old videotapes with a demonic being trying to kill a family of three by hanging them from a tree. He fails when the rope breaks and he never actually gets to hang them. Additionally, Becky finds an old box and develops an attachment to it, and Wyatt continues to hang out with his imaginary friend.

New York City teenager Clary Fray (Lily Collins) begins seeing a strange symbol, worrying her mother Jocelyn Fray (Lena Headey) and her mother's friend Luke Garroway (Aidan Turner). Later, at a nightclub with her friend, Simon Lewis (Robert Sheehan), Clary is the only person who sees Jace Wayland (Jamie Campbell Bower) killing a man. Meanwhile, Jocelyn is abducted by two men, Emil Pangborn (Kevin Durand) and Samuel Blackwell (Robert Maillet), but she is able to call Clary and warn her about someone named Valentine. Jocelyn drinks a potion putting her in a comatose state. Returning home, Clary finds her mother missing and is attacked by a demon. Jace, a Shadowhunter, appears and kills it. Jocelyn was also Shadowhunter (also called Nephilim), a warrior that slays demons, and Clary has inherited her powers, including the ability to use runes.

Madame Dorothea (C. C. H. Pounder), the Fray's neighbor and a witch, deduces that Pangborn and Blackwell seek the Mortal Cup, one of the three Mortal Instruments given to the first Shadowhunter by the Angel Raziel. It allows normal humans to become half-Angel Shadowhunters. Simon, now able to see Jace, arrives and they go to Luke's bookstore. Pangborn and Blackwell are interrogating Luke there, who claims he cares nothing for Jocelyn and only wants the Mortal Cup. The trio escapes to the Shadowhunters' hideout, the Institute, where Clary and Simon meet Shadowhunters Alec Lightwood (Kevin Zegers) and Isabelle Lightwood (Jemima West), and their leader, Hodge Starkweather (Jared Harris). He reveals that Valentine Morgenstern (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), an ex-Shadowhunter who betrayed the Nephilim seeks the Mortal Cup to control all Shadowhunters and demons.
